[RESOLVED] PinballX Losing focus when switching tables

Jodannar

Recommended Posts

I still have this issue without a resolution. Upgraded to windows 10, still exists. Really not sure whats going on. Maybe flv codecs not right ?

The stalling happens on tables of the same system. eg. Visual Pinball 9.9 (or rather same PinballX system List)

Tables from other systems will correctly show their images. Videos load correctly for first table in system selected, then stalls on scrolling to 2nd and stays still framed for all future selected tables of the same system.

Tables that use a still image for the table view within the affected system still display correctly. only those with videos defined experience the incorrect still frame from video of previous table

Are you using .flv or .mp4 videos or a mix of the two? Personally, I have found it better to stick with one format, with preference of .mp4 over .flv and convert any .flv files I encounter in my setups to .mp4 without any performance issues.

Recommend a converter app? ones i tried were just bloatware/trojan stocks

Convert-It is a pretty great set of tools developed by Spesoft (i.e. Tom Spiers developer of PinballX). If not Convert-IT, then my recommendation would go to the tried and true Handbrake, which is another wonderful video conversion tool.

Jodannar: Don't know if your problem is already solved, but this reminds me a little bit on my problem more than a year ago when I had troubles to navigate thru the tables in PBX.

At that time it looked like Windows "steals" keystrokes from PBX and focus was changing to other open windows in background.

http://www.gameex.info/forums/topic/14859-real-pinmame-dmd-in-pinballx-beta-attached/page-6#entry129267

My only workaround was to change the left/right key definition in PBX setup from standard Left Shift/Right Shift to something else ("Cursor Left" and "Cursor Right" in my case).

The root cause was never found completely and so my cab still works with the changed keys.

Only an idea, but maybe you can do a quick test with changed PBX navigation keys ?

  • 3 months later...

I got this working last weekend finally. Turned out to be permissions on the actual media files directory. For some reason windows 10 has made some of the files read only. changing all the directories and files for pinball fixes the issue (media folders).

FANTASTIC, its fixed... until I restart my machine and the videos no longer work. Permissions are transferred back to a combination of read only and non-read only in windows. I can't find the readonly files, but going back into the videos directory and marking everything as read/write again fixes it.. until the next restart

Any ideas whats causing this? Account is a full administrator.

The Read Only bliock under the Properties>Security tab is going to be checked regardless. Likely you are going to have to search through the Advanced security settings and tinker with the access settings for user categories on your system. MS has really locked down security settings with the latest version, but you will find similar complaints for prior versions. Unfortunately, "Google" will be your firend on this one in order to find that sweet spot.

But how you are making the change is not detailed.  Are you clicking the check box on the main properties tab or drilling down into the advanced security settings?

Again, this is a widely reported issue if you "Google" with keywords "windows 10 read only". You will see that there are many reports of this issue and a ton more suggestions on how to fix. Not all solutions work for all users, so you will need to find the one that works for your set up.

You may have to apply the same to other users or add others. Trust me on this, it is an OS issue, not a PinballX issue that is going to require some trial and error until it works right on your system.

Running the lite Exe doesn't cause the issue with no changes. I've disabled pinnate and b2s for the normal Exe and it still has the issue. What else differs from the lite to the normal Exe that may cause this? Lite works every time even after a restart

But the lite version plays the videos correctly. So I'm trying to figure out where the issue lies. if the lite can do it, it has the same permissions as the full exe.

Disabling dmd and b2s should be similar to running lite, no plugins, but that doesn't correct the issue either.

I am now unable to replicate the videos working in the standard EXE at all. (i.e. first 2 vids work, then i get frozen frame)

Did you make any further changes with you security settings?  Something just isn't right here and your log file didn't provide anything useful to me. Have you checked Event Viewer in Windows to see if there were any error messages at the time of the freeze?

Tom just released an updated version of PinballX.  Please download and install over the current version and provide updated pinballx.ini and log.txt (at the time of the error) files. Thanks.

Okay had another look at this tonight. Fired up pinball X, error occurs. Check Windows event log.. No events related to PinballX or anything else at the time of the error.

Install latest pinball x update. Everything works, nothing rubbings as administrator.

Restart machine, issue reoccurs. Reinstall over the top again, doesn't correct issue.

Run PinballX as admin, issue still happens. I am absolutely baffled by this

Addendum: removing admin prioveledges from pinball x, forcing read only off on files in pinball x directory, and it works again... until restart. Afr restart no permission have changed. So F'n weird

Completely started again tonight. Uninstalled pinballx and installed the latest version fresh. Set up vp, launched it, video issue occurs with even the default media packs. Reinstalled codecs no change.

Short answer: no

Running pinballx as a regular user the videos work. B2s as a regular user. Need to alt tab to vp on launch though and it won't exit. Vp running as admin
