So think I managed to do about 20/30 today. It's quite easy when you get the hang of it.

That's 141 down and 1,551 to go!

We'll see how this goes, but it's definitely not a one man job.

I noticed that there are some dev logos that are probably not in the source data that Flash provided, but should probably be included in the collection none-the-less. Most of these will be devs for more recent PC games. While there isn't a database for these, some users (including myself) will proably create custom databases for loading software descriptions. Having these available will be most useful.

Here's what I'm running into:

Right now I just finished a 15 minute search for ARC Entertainment, and I found something, but I doubt it's what I was looking for becasue it was for PSN and PS3. Nobody I know is currently emulating these, so it's doubtful I found the one I was searching for.

It would be nice if we knew the platform the dev was coding for. I can see adding that info for 5k games being a lot of work, but it would help to narrow it down.

Some of these devs are so old and obscure, that they are only named by association with the publisher. I'm sure this isn't breaking news to you guys!

We could create another sheet called "Custom" where users could enter their own game names and follow the normal drill for these 'customs.' Would that do it?

@ tthurman: Great hunting and thanks for the sources - do you mind if I pick these up and format them for the final versions?

You're right - some of the devs are only for 1 game, 30 years ago - so may have no logo - we'll have to think about what we do about these. Maybe for these, just put a comment on the game name cell (right click, comment) so we can keep track of research done and then maybe create custom logos for un-logo'd devs.

And also, yeah, the platform can be a good clue. However, not sure can get these into the sheet as devs can be for more than one platform and also not sure practically how to do this. I'm starting to leave 'research' in a comment against the game name - so others can see what's been tried. What I also do is use this link:

http://gamesdbase.com/developers.aspx

This db mirrors the one used to create this list - find your Dev and then it'll list the games/systems associated with it.

Cheers for your contributions, tthurman. :)

Because of difficulties in sourcing - not coming out the best quality! Having to grab some from boxart @ 150px wide! If anyone's a whizz with despeckle, blur and antialias - let me know your magic! :)

In some case you may have to default to the publisher's logo for un-logoed devs. If they were a dev for Nintendo and do not have a logo one may have to default to the Nintendo logo to fill.

Complicated business isn't it? From looking around, appears tgeres many levels to game development. The more obscure seem to be individuals or small companies, which are assisted by larger development houses and then published by other companies. A number of games have 3 or 4 company logos on.

My guess is someones worked really harc to track down and honour the original developer in the databse work. May be a case of custom logos for the obcure.

Ironic yhing is for individuals, there are often pictures of them on fansites etc... might be a case of having their boatrace with stylised text sensative to the era for their logos.

Another hour and 14 done! Getting surprised at how quickly you can get through them once you get set up right. Still = around 120 hours though :/

Patience, Grasshopper! It will happen as it is meant to happen. This will be a long haul project with people coming and going and contributing as they are able and willing.

I almost did this last night, as the publisher logo was available for Aprinet, I'll go dig it back up.

stigzler, Filling up the dropbox today I C, also feel free to do whatever you need to, I'm just pointing to them.

Anyione else notice that googledocs doesn't play nice with Firefox? I get constant crashes, so I just open IE, which keeps me from closing it accidentally anyway.

Nice one chaps.

The no-logo Developer issue:

Thinking about this, I think it might be best if we don't use a publisher logo in the place of a Developer where there is no logo. My feeling is it's best to preserve each to their roles, to keep the data straight (dunno how to explain that one). Unless the GameExDB developer is a sub-developer, or one carried by a larger developer/producer (and not a publisher) - seen a few about where bigger software houses have put their name to it. If they had an authoring role, this may be OK. Dunno - it's tricky innit.

Maybe, in time, we can make custom logos for the 'no-logo'd' developers.

Right. Back to it. I'm obsessed. Nearly finished "A". :)

Plan is to store final versions on dropbox whilst working through them. This means that logos will be visible to everyone via:

https://sites.google.com/site/alienarcade74/logos

The dropbox "final" folder can't be edited so they're secure there (with the below precautions).

Of course, keeping a local backup copy of the dropbox "final" "for approval" and "source" folders on my local machine. Then will be periodically uploading 'off site' to the FTP server.

Thanks!

I want to do my part to help, and there is still much to do once the source has been found, so I pretty much just dug in my heels and went for it. You get on a roll of sorts, but man, I was dreaming logos Monday night

The guy's on fire...

thur2.png

Tthurman's fantastic efforts have also made me rethink things a bit... I'm going to concentrate on getting all source logos first... The upscaling to 600px is a project in itself, and I'm just needing small developer logos at the moment for a project to compliment Adultery's GameTagger tag. Therefore, will come back to upscaled quality versions at a later date.

Of course - there's nothing stopping those of you with infinitely more graphics prowess than I getting stuck in... :)
