Dug1203
Hello, everyone. I have recently started creating my machine, and I need some help. The other day I had moved a bunch of MAME ROMS to the proper directory through the set up wizard, and made sure that they all worked . Then, something happened. All but two of the 22 games that I have are now loading black screens, and then after about 5 seconds they load out to the main menu. Does anyone know what may have caused this? I would also like to know if MAME ROMS are known for not working a lot of the time. I have well over 100 and only a handful of them work. Separately, I am also having problems with the nestopia emulator recognizing my NES ROMS while in GameEx. The error message says something about file extension .dll not being found. I do know that they work as I have run them with the same emulator outside of GameEx. I really like this frontend, so far. I am just a little frustrated about the situation. On even more of a side note, I would like to know what I can do about getting the pre-loaded ROMS, Dk, Smash Tv, Tempest, etc. to boot up and become playable, as they are currently not working either. Again, I am really excited to use this FE. Thank you for reading this, and I look forward to your much needed help.Doug Edited May 14, 2013 by nullPointer Please do not discuss how ROMs are obtained. nullPointer
Howdy Doug, and welcome to the GameEx forums! So it sounds like we’ve got some work to do here, so let’s get the most important order of business out of the way first. In order to better assist you we’re going to need to know more about your setup. The How to Ask For Help thread will be your best friend insofar as how to access the requested information (Wow - you just got here and you already have a best friend!)Regarding you MAME problem it would be good to see your GameEx.ini, your GameEx log (after attempting to run a problematic game through MAME), and your runitgame.bat (attempting to run a problematic game through MAME)For the Nestopia issue it would be good to upload your emulator config for Nestopia, your GameEx log (attempting to run a problematic game through Nestopia), and your runitgame.bat (attempting to run a problematic game through Nestopia). As a final note GameEx doesn’t come preloaded with any ROMs. It does come with videos and artwork for DK, Smash TV, Tempest, etc which serve as something of a tech demo for the frontend. All the games are necessarily supplied by you.I look forward to hearing from you Doug, so we can dive into some troubleshooting!

nullPointer
Regarding your MAME issue, it appears that you've got MAME set up as a standard generic emulator. In the Setup Wizard you'll find that MAME actually has its own dedicated MAME Settings section for configuration. You'll want to configure MAME through the dedicated section rather than as a standard emulator. It is possible to configure MAME as a standard emulator through GameEx, but you'll want to avoid that if at all possible since GameEx has quite a number of special features dedicated to MAME that are only available through the dedicated MAME Settings section (plus it's just much less of a headache this way ).Edit:I meant to mention it before, but definitely follow fReq's advice regarding the DirectX update (his advice is gospel 'round these parts). You can do that right here: DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. Let us know how everything is going Doug!
Dug1203
Thanks a whole lot for the info fellas. I updated some of that already, but when I put my ROMS into the correct file path they still don't show up in the dedicated MAME section. I will try removing MAME from the "emulators" list. Maybe that will help with the confusion. Thanks again. I will let you all know for sure.
Dug1203
Frequency. What should I do after I get the updated DirectX? Do I update GameEx? Thanks.
nullPointer
You shouldn't have to do anything with GameEx since it seems that Nestopia was the application missing a DirectX dependency. When you updated DirectX it should hopefully have placed d3dx9_43.dll in the proper directory, Try running Nestopia again and see if you get different results. Dug1203
All done. I can get them to work in both EMs. However, I have found that Nestopia doesn't like to open up to full screen and that MAME, when I updated the games, gave me a ton of crap that I didn't put in there. I had only added like 5 ROMS and I now have over 3500 or something like that. I even have the Indi developer games option turned off so I should, in theory, have been able to see what I have added, right? I looked for a way to have Nestopia open up to full screen and it doesn't seem like there is an option. Is there an option in the emulator itself that I can tweek to make that happen. Thanks again. You have all be very helpful.

There is a setting in Nestopia to set a fullscreen flag, but I'm away from my emulation rig at the moment. This post should be exceedingly helpful in that regard.Regarding your plethora of MAME games, have you rebuilt your list after applying changes? If you scroll down to the bottom of your MAME menu in GameEx (not your game list, but the menu that lists game categories and the like), you'll see an option to rebuild your list. Give that a whirl and see what happens. If that doesn't work, post up your GameEx.ini and we'll have a look-see.Thanks DougI see that fReq beat me to the Nestopia thing. Redundant advice isn't necessarily bad advice it just reinforces the concept. Yeah ... that's what I'm going with.
Tempest
Also with Mame, there is an option for existing roms only.
Dug1203
Thanks again to all of you. I will try those out. Out of curiosity, what is it that you would look for in the .ini files or the last game log?
nullPointer
What!? You want to see the wizard behind the curtain!? Gaze into the crystal ball of our troubleshooting process!? Learn the esoteric means by which we commune with the great spirits of GameEx!? Learn the secret transcendental language by which we converse with the oracle!? Are you sure you're ready for that!?OK sorry. Honestly I'm sure everyone has their own methods of gleaning information form the logs and configs. More than anything it just takes experience in terms of analyzing the problem statement:MAME is showing a lot more games than I actually haveand applying knowledge of the system to resolve that:Sounds like it's likely related to the Only Existing ROMs setting on the MAME Settings screenSo yeah, I'm pretty sure Tempest nailed it. In this particular instance that would be the first setting I would check in your GameEx.ini
Dug1203
New problem: Nestopia was opening yesterday, and now opens to a black screen and stays there. Any thoughts? I will check the GameEx .ini file again as well. Thanks for the help as always.
nullPointer
In this case the best means of troubleshooting would be your runitgame.bat in combination with your emulator config. Try to run Nestopia from runitgame.bat. If it works that way, then it likely points to a problem in your GameEx configuration. If it still doesn't work via runitgame.bat, then it's more likely a problem with Nestopia (or possibly with GameEx, but in this case if the problem is with GameEx it will be explicitly observable as a command within runitgame.bat.)If your game doesn't work through runitgame.bat, add a pause line to the file and run it again to see if any sort of error information is passed back to the command console. Check the How to Ask For Help thread for details on this.

Dug1203
Sucesssss!!!!! Thanks so very much guys. I plan to purchase the full version of GameEx tomorrow, actually. I really just wanted to see if it would do what I needed it to before I spent any money on it. It's a very nice program, and well put together. Now all I have to do is find some Parents for my MAME and I think that should do it. So, thanks again to all of you. nullPointer you're witt was very much appreciated and your willingness to help out a complete stranger in a light and friendly way, thanks to Frequency and Tempest for their help as well. It was very direct and to the point. If anyone asks I will certainly refer them here. Have a great day.

Dug1203
I have some little, wrap up, sort of questions. Upon buying the full access, will all of my emulators rotate 90 degrees or just GameEx? Also, I noticed that some of the verticle games have bezzles that have been preloaded. Is there a way to make bezzles, or get ones that match the other games that may not have them? Thanks again. Talk to you all soon.
