Official System Names

Recommended Posts

[Arcade] Arcade (Misfit Mame)

[Console] Sega Super Control Station (SF-7000)

[PC] Sega Computer 3000 (SC-3000)

[Other] Beats of Rage

[Other] FretsonFire

[Other] UltraStar Deluxe

Couple notes just for the sake of avoiding duplicates...

Misfit Mame was recently renamed to HBMAME.

Beats of Rage is the same as OpenBOR. Maybe Beats of Rage is a better name for this system? I dunno...

If we're adding Frets on Fire then perhaps...

[Other] Stepmania

Has a place on the list too?

*EDIT*

I think we should add ...

[Mobile] Android

[Mobile] Android (Bluestacks)

Frets on Fire is a PC game similar to Guitar Hero on the consoles. Not quite in the same as OpenBOR. For the purpose of categorizing it really should be treated as a PC game and not as an emulator or platform. Should someone want to create a logo or backgrounds and run it as a stand alone program, that is fine, or even go so far as create their own db, even better.

Is it worth having generic entries such as

[Console] Nintendo

[Console] Sega

etc...

Also a few more entries worth noting maybe...

Nintendo Vs.

Nintendo Arcade Systems

IMO having the generic system company names seems more in the direction of Custom Menu setup.

I added the following:

[PC] Z-Code Interactive Fiction (Windows Frotz)

The Windows Frotz 1.5 interpreter can be found here. We already host the db that i created. I have attached the working .ini for this as well. This emulator is best known for running the popular Infocom games (Zork, Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, etc.) and a few other similar formats outside of the Infocom branding.

PC Z-Code Interactive Fiction.ini

Suggestions:

Spelling:

Change [Console] Coleco Vision to [Console] ColecoVision or [Console] Coleco Industries ColecoVision (ColecoVision is one Word)

Change [Console] Nintendo N64 to [Console] Nintendo 64
Change [PC] Apple 2GS to [PC] Apple IIGS
Change [PC] Tangerine Oric to [PC] Tangerine Oric 1

Add Manufacturer / Publisher in keeping with the general format:

Change [Console] Nuon to [Console] VM Labs Nuon
Change [PC] Big Fish Games to [PC] Big Fish Studios' Big Fish Games
Change [PC] Enterprise to [PC] Enterprise Computers' Enterprise
Change [PC] Frets on Fire to [PC] Unreal Voodoo Frets on Fire
Change [PC] Gog to [PC] GOG Ltd Gog
Change [PC] Games for Windows to [PC] Microsoft Games for Windows
Change [PC] PopCap to [PC] Electronic Arts PopCap
Change [PC] ScummVM to [PC] Ludvig Strigeus' ScummVM
Change [PC] Steam to [PC] Valve Steam
Change [PC] Stepmania to [PC] Chris Danford's Stepmania

As noted previously:
Change [PC] Sega Computer 3000 (SC-3000) to [PC] Sega SC-3000

Other considerations: (In keeping with MESS naming)

Change [PC] MGT Sam Coupe to [PC] Miles Gordon Technology Sam Coupe
Change [Console] GCE Vectrex to [Console] General Consumer Electronics Vectrex
Change [Console] NEC [All Systems] to [Console] Nippon Electronic Company [All Systems]

It might also be a good idea to have a delimiter between the Publisher and System names. EG. [PC] Unreal Voodoo - Frets on Fire

I have no problem with much of this although we might need to make sure that special chars such as ' (apostrophe) will not cause an issue with any conversions to XML that may take place or in the file\path naming of the OS. Also, with regards to the MESS naming, is it necessary to spell things out to the extent? Can't some of that conversion take place via the db?

I threw the apostophies in there myself because I thought it looked better than 'Enterprise Computers Enterprise'. Having a delimiter between the publisher and system name would help clarify things. Enterprise Computers - Enterprise

Mess Naming: It doesn't matter to me. I'm just throwing it out there. I just use a few stringreplace commands to get them to match to existing GameEx convention. I just figure that matching Mess couldn't be a bad thing.

Flash is going to be taking over as manager of the system names list now. It makes sense since he co-ordinates all the databases. So hopefully he will come in and make some final decisions about some of your suggestions Tempest.

The only thing I personally don't like about your changes Tempest is the non-standard use of the apostrophe. ie. [PC] Enterprise Computers' Enterprise should just be [PC] Enterprise Computers Enterprise. It may look a little strange but it follows the current convention.

Currently we have the data split up into the profiles as such:

System=Nintendo N64Category=ConsoleEmulator=Project64
Perhaps we could add another field called 'Company' and split them up like this:

Company=NintendoSystem=N64Category=ConsoleEmulator=Project64
Then the filename will be:

[Category] Company System (Emulator)
We could then add a hyphen to split it like so:

[Category] Company - System (Emulator)
Only problem is it will take a bit of work to change everything over to match this format.
