I've now changed this theme to be separate backgrounds instead so you can place them in any theme you like and set the background in your Emulator setup.

Copy the backgrounds into your theme's MEDIA folder then open the GameEx Setup Wizard and select Custom->Emulator Setup (3). You can now go through your emulators and set "Custom Background" to select the background you want for your emulators.

I've been putting together a new "UltraCade" style theme for GameEx. Well actually I have a few uses for it including something I'm privately working on, but I thought these would look cool in GameEx as well.

The thing is I haven't got all the systems I wan't in the Theme yet. So please take a look and put in a request. But not only that I'd like people to help find artwork to suit the system. Like for the Amiga I have used "Zool" character, and for ZX Spectrum I used "Head over Heels". I also need the graphics at a decent resolution (at least 640x480). So if you want a system added, get on Google Images and find the graphics and I will cut out the background and put it into the theme. It's very time consuming just finding decent quality art so I'm hoping with the help of people here I can get the theme finished.

Anyway here is a picture with some thumbnails of the current designs. Some look very similar to HS but I will probably change those ones around a bit as I was being lazy.

Looks really nice NutKaze, sorry - HeadKaze :).. What resolution does it run at?

Ps. The mame space invader looks a bit like he has been on the Vodka, he looks like he is walking a bit on the wank, can you put a pint in his hand? :)

Space Invader? Don't you mean PacMan? Have you been on the pints again? lol I was going to say "walking a bit on the wank" but wank must mean something different to the British ;)

They are designed in 640x480. I couldn't go higher than that because it's literally impossible to find character graphics that are a higher res than that. But it will be easy enough to upsize them in Photoshop to 1024x768. I think GameEx may even be able to do that itself.

EDIT: Do you think I should add MCE style backgrounds and integrate it into the default theme style? Or do you think it should have different background designs?

Amiga - Shadow of the Beast
Atari ST - Star Glider
Amstrad CPC - Sorcery
Commodore 64 - Ghosts & Goblins
ZX Spectrum - Manic Minor or Jet Set Willt
32x - Doom
CPS3 Emu - 3rd Strike
PC Engine - R-Type
Snes - Donkey Kong Country

The rest look wicked...

No, i did mean the mame space invader - have another look. (he is gonna fall over)

Wank means the same here except we have an expression that "on the wank" usually refering to shelves that are on the slant :)

I prefer not to use the mce style - it does get a bit yawnsome. I have to look at something similar every time i run gameex using V3, sick of it. I like different background designs, much nicer.

Looks nice though. shame it is a low resolution. I had the same problem (of sorts) when i did the retrobox theme (did you ever look at it? got some nice new machine artwork/icons in it). It was hard to get the artwork high enough for 1920x1200 :)

Et tu, HK? Hyperspin....really?

Actually, while it looks to be a resource BEAST, it has some definite potential.

I figured these looked a lot like the ones that hyperspin were using. If not, my bad ;)

yeah, they reminded me of hyperspin too. i guess the hyperspin project also takes inspiration from ultracade. how would the themes work? does it change the layout and background for each emulator's page/gamelist?

you can specify a backround pic per emu in gameex.

Sweet, thanks Flash :)

So what would be a good game character for ChannelF? Also I would like a new Future Pinball image if you have one, as I hate those bumpers too.

I couldn't go with some characters because I couldn't find a decent quality image, so like I said if you find good quality images of the characters then post a link so I can grab it :)

Yes they can be used as backgrounds in GameEx but I might make them more like the GameEx style. The reason I used Ultracade in the title is because HS is a clone and I didn't want the thread to be derailed into talk about HS. Mainly because I thought Tom would rather these boards be focused on GameEx. That being said we do wish Bill and Brian the best with the HS project.

BTW I have seen newer screenshots of HS and it looks very different from the original video even so I do intend on changing the layouts around a bit to be more GameEx style. The hard part is collecting the graphics and cutting them out, not arranging them into a design.

Alot of the images are obtained through arcadeflyers.com it is a great resource.
I actually had a channel f and it was actually fun.. But not heavy on art.
I dug these up on the net tho for ya. I have a few maze games and a baseball game. That I remember most

Here is a good quality video pinball table. Thought that may fit in with the whole "games on the pc video screen thing".

And it is "future pinball" :)
