[RESOLVED] Problems With My Preview Videos After Codec Installation

Recommended Posts

I have this problem now where the first 10 seconds or so of most of my preview videos are fast forwarded when I'm scrolling through my games, no matter the system. I'm 99.999% sure it has to do with some Codecs I've recently installed. They messed with my Audio and Video Decoder (LAV?) settings. Any help on messing how to get things back to normal would be helpful as I have never had to mess with this sort of thing. Theres this new thing called Haali Media Splitter thats never been in my system tray thats never been there before either and I can't find it in my Programs list to uninstall it.

MIght think about uninstalling all codecs and start from scratch. I use the Shark 007 codec pack (just the 32-bit as the 64-bit really isn't necessary) and it suits my setup jsut fine.

But Sony Vegas needs certain codecs for videos I've been editing. Is the Shark codec pack gonna do me right?

What kind of codecs? Doesnt Vegas installs the codecs needed? I use only Sharc codecs and Quicktime, on my working machine... no problems at all, while video editing and doing other media stuff. You also should know that the FFDshow codec is allready installed, if you use the Shark codec pack ;) . So I guess, you installed it twice, which can lead to problems, because FFDshow in standalone mode, makes stuff like you described (i.e. pop-up-menue in taskbar etc.).

If uberpubert69 really do video cutting / editing, then I recommend to use the 64bit pack, because the codecs are significantly faster than their 32bit counterparts, when it comes to encoding, hence faster working ;) . If you only need codecs for "watching" media, I agree with Draco and the 32bit stuff is maybe enough.

Also be aware of this, as stated on the Sharks forums:

64bit users...

- The default Windows Media Player is 32bit, so make settings in the 32bit app for this player.

- Media Center is a 64bit player, so you need to make settings in the 64bit app for Media Center.

I really appreciate all the responses, I ended up uninstalling all my codecs and installing the advanced codecs pack from Shark. The fast forwarding issue is gone now. It's just a matter of if my Vegas can open my .avi files still. Trying my hand at a video review of Bleeders aka Hemoglobin(terrible horror film). I didn't even know shark existed so thank you all for pointing me in the right direction! :)

It may also be a matter of going into the Shark007 setup and tinkering with the specific codecs settings.

Thanks man VJsw1MaU.jpeg

lol but seriously what setting should I mess with? I'm looking at the AVI settings and the only thing I see is different types of splitters to choose from. Which are Microsoft's, Gabest's, Haali's, and LAV's.

Not sure what to tell you. You got GameEx fixed, which is my only concern TBH. You may want to look here to see if that helps you with Sony Vegas . Just from the 30 seconds of "googling" the innerwebs it appears to be a common issue with your editing software.

Yes, but I had already fixed that problem on my own. But, my solution had caused the problem with my preview snaps and is what started this thread to begin with. If I do whatever it is I did again to fix my problem I will surely have the problem with my Video Snaps return. Which will most likely result in another thread or more requests for help. A poop loop if you will. But I kinda want my Video Snaps to be intact more than I want my editor to work, so I'll end this loop before it starts, I'll just have to convert my video formats before editing I guess... unless u-man has something up his sleeve.

No, i dont have a better or more "professional" solution other than to convert your AVI´s to a lossless codec. Thats what I do in general, because even when the apps are telling you, that you can use compressed or lossy codecs for cutting/editing, i have experienced often many problems, that came with them :D . The only exception for me, are files from cameras, which i bet is not the case with your AVI´s.

Especially Xvid is somehow "problematic", because it is not a "official" codec, it is derived from Divx (see it like a hack from Divx).

I hope for you, that these AVI´s are not too long in terms of time-length, because 1 hour lossless codec is about 20-40GB. In the past many apps did this conversion automatically, but with the time some apps started to skip this process to be a "faster" competitor and using less diskspace. I am not a fan of this behaviour, as lossy codecs often change, like (hopefully ;) ) your underwear and that will automatically leads to problems i.e. with color-grading plugins. I could write a book here, but I want to keep it simple.

It is very long in terms of time-length. :/ I know. I tried to convert my file before actually, and it maxed out my HDD space. I have even less space since my old HDD crashed. I had extracted the audio from the video I was editing to clean up the VCR tape white noise and then I tried editing the audio back in and it got to 20+GB after only 30 minutes of a 90 minute movie then I ran out of space. Completely forgot how terrible that was lol.

Then try to convert them into MP4 with a slightly higher bitrate (in your case 1500-2000) like Draco allready said and see if you can import them afterwards. Thank God they are only 640x480 :) .

Regarding Lossless codecs: thats why studios use massive RAID setups ;) . If you want to do this, on a regular basis, i recommend you to buy a 2-4TB HDD, they are not too expensive.

Try to avoid Xvid or MKV formats.

Regardless, your issue is now with resolving the application issue you have with Sony Vegas. You have the resolution for using GameEx with codecs that work for it. I am marking this as resolved and suggest taking any further discussion of the Sony Vegas software to either the Social Club or perhaps a forum dedicated to working issues with that product.
