Freezing NetFlix and blank YouTube

Ages ago (in those days when Microsoft was still pushing the ,MDI file format as an alternative for .PDF) I fooled around with GameEx. Haven't touched it for ages, but now I am looking at it again. (This because a new HTPC will return to the living room running Steam, Netflix, and some other stuff.)

Unfortunately there are several things I cannot seem to get to work.

1. NetFlix makes GameEx freeze.

As soon as I launch NetFlix the GameEx window totally freezes, and CPU goes up to 25% permanently.

(Note: I'm in Europe.)

2. YouTube leads to a blank screen.

As soon as I start the YouTube option the screen goes black. I can still return to GameEx but on YouTube itself nothing happens.

3. System config.

Windows 7 (UK version) fully patched

NVida GT450 (latest drivers installed)

Default browser FireFox

I'm not a total noob (at least I hope I'm no longer one :-)) but I feel a bit lost. Some help would be seriously appreciated.

Glad to have you back!

First thing that comes to mind, do you have the preferred codec pack installed?

If you don't have this installed, and are running 64 bit, you need to install 32 bit first, then the 64 bit version.

If that isn't it, please post your gameex.ini and log.txt.

Is Netflix totally dropping the API for existing devs or just how some of the data is accessed or restricted? I had read several articles about it and it is somewhat confusing on the face of it as to what depth.

I have not really looked into it. I just had an email from them that they were dropping the API.

Ive not had any feedback on this GameEx feature so I am assuming its not too big of a deal.

Thats gonna suck if the Netflix API will no longer be available. I don't use it in GameEx, but do heavily with Media Center. While the experience is lacking tremendoulsy, it is still way better than getting infront of a computer screen to pick what you want to watch when you can do it from your bed/couch. With the API completely leaving, that will cut off all outside access to their content and limit everything to just inhouse "browser" selecting won't it? What about things like BluRay Players, Xbox, Playstation, etc. How will that all work out if the API is gone? Yet another nail in Netflix's coffin I'm afraid.

Just read the post from the Netflix dev team and it seems they are cutting the available base way down. That is a shame as I think that some of the indie work has created better browsers than Netflix has as a company.

This is what I got from them:

Netflix API Developers,

As Netflix continues to grow internationally, the emphasis of our engineering efforts is to satisfy a growing member base and a growing number of devices. To better focus our efforts and to align them with the needs of our global member base, we will be retiring the public API program. Effective on November 14, 2014, public API developers will no longer be able to access Netflix content. All requests to the public API will return 404 errors.

It's always worked just fine for me anyway....

And that sucks about them drypoint the api, but I completely understand why they're doing it...

(Note that the Shark007 codecs come with lots of adware

Ahh, sorry about that, I hate it when devs do this, and they all seem to eventually fall into this category. In fairness to them, they probably aren't getting the support they need, and turn to this as a result. At least give the option to "not agree"!
