nullPointer - some sad news

A quick note to all regarding nullPointer. As some of you have probably noticed, Aaron (nullPointer) has been a bit absent as of late. It is with heartfelt sympathy that I announce on his behalf that his mother, Janet S. Meury, passed away Tuesday evening.

Aaron told me she was a librarian by profession, a poet and is actually published as a co-author of a book and a contributor of a few other collections and anthologies. Her passion was teaching people how to appreciate the written word. He told me the best way to honor her memory would be to pick up and read a good book.

Please keep Aaron and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they work their way through this period of loss. I have discussed some things to do with the mods and admins to honor our friend and the memory of his mother.

Based upon her love of reading and sharing with others, I would like to ask that each of you consider a donation of some sort that reflects that love - it can be a monetary donation to a local library or reading program, donating of your time assisting with the same, even just taking the time to buy a nice book and read along with your child, significant other, or someone bed-ridden.

My wife and I are looking into some of the programs here in town to see whom to contact to make a donation for purchasing books for children of families that cannot afford to do so.

Thank you,

Mike

I'm deeply sorry for your loss Aaron and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I understand your mother's passion was teaching people how to appreciate the written word. I think you've inherited her love for this as I have come to know you as very articulate. Through little things like this our loved ones will be remembered...

My deepest sympathies to you and your family.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss NP. Try not to dwell too much on it. I can only imagine what you're going through. I haven't had a death in my family since I was 12 (unless you count my cat) and that was my uncle. An immediate family member has got to be a million times worse. I know I don't know you personally, but just hearing about it and writing this message (thinking about my own family) has actually got me teared up and weepy. So take heart in knowing that she loved you very much, it was why she gave birth to you instead of abortion. Just remember you'll see her again when your own time comes. Rejoice in that.

And all your friends here in GameEx and every where else you go, people will be waiting for you and welcome you back when you're ready. Don't feel rushed. Mourn for as long as it takes.

Thanks to each and every one of you for your kind gestures, condolences, thoughts, prayers, and positive energy. My mom had been battling an unusual form of inoperable lung cancer (BAC) for 6 years through chemo therapy, vitamin regimens, and various other means. She would have wanted me to point out that she was a non-smoker (or at least for many, many years). At any rate, it was a tough go of it and she put up one hell of a fight.

In many ways, I would not be here on these forums if not for my mom (… beyond the obvious reasons). On Christmas morning of 1987 I received a shiny new NES console from my mom. It couldn’t have been easy on a single mom’s salary, but she managed it. I had been exposed to computer games in the homes of others, and had spent some time playing console games at friends houses (notably an old Atari 2600 at my best friend’s house), but it was this console that would open a virtual world to me. Along with the pack in titles of Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt (separate carts no less!), I also received ExciteBike and The Legend of Zelda that year. My mom and I found a common bond over the Legend of Zelda over the course of the winter. I would play in the evenings after finishing home work, and she would play later into the night after I went to bed. The next day we would compare notes on our in-game discoveries. She even went so far as having the pack-in overworld map laminated through her work so that we could use a dry erase marker to make notes. It’s funny how games become tied to memories like that, and through them that we share common experiences.

Thanks once again to all my friends here on these forums, you guys really are like an extended family to me. An extended family of gaming that all started for me with my mom, and branched outward over the years in strange and wonderful ways. Thanks mom.

So sorry for your loss Aaron. I know your pain as my mother just passed away on June 1st. One of the reasons I myself have not been as active lately. She had a massive heart attack and complications from diabetes. She lost her foot a few years ago, and then her leg was amputated in efforts to save her life. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family my friend. Hang in there.

Oh my gosh Riffman, I'm so sorry to hear that. It sounds like your mom was one hell of a fighter. I take some solace in knowing that both our moms no longer have to suffer through grueling medical procedures as a result of illness. They can be at peace now. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours as well. Take care of yourself my friend.

Yeah, mom was a fighter, and stubborn as hell! :P I think that's one of the reasons she lasted as long as she did. I just got married on the 14th of June, my wife and I had originally planned our wedding for next spring, but my mother getting ill motivated us to push it forward... however, she still didn't make it. I know she was there in spirit and for that alone, I can be somewhat at peace. Knowing she isn't suffering anymore is a huge help in dealing with this loss. My mother also bought my first NES in Christmas of '89. I'll never forget it! Had it not been for her, I may not have ever been "in love" with gaming the way that I am today. Some of my fondest memories come from my NES/SNES days, and believe it or not, I still have that old NES and it still works... eh, kind of... needs a leaf blower to get it going, lol

I hope your doing better Aaron, take it a day at a time... that's how I'm able to deal. Thanks for the condolences, thoughts and prayers. Also, thanks to the rest of you as well. Remember to take time out and tell someone you love them... you just never know guys. I expected my mother to at least have a few more months left... I was in shock when I got the call... I really wanted just one more hour with her, still had lots to say.

Bad to hear that sad news :( I feel really sorry for bringing you my late condolences. I am really bad in saying useful things in such cases. Aaron I wish you all the power you need when you go through this hard time if a family member dies.

All my best wishes for you.

I haven't been on in a while, so only just learned of this today. My sincere condolences, Aaron and my thoughts go out to you. What is clear from your temperament and posts is that your mother gifted you with a fine respect for both words and people. It also looks like she had a keen attunement towards creation and imagination; again, qualities evident and apparent in her son. Look after and be kind to yourself over the next few weeks, she will be wishing for that.

Condolences to yourself too, Riffman. I'm wondering whether your mum had a good sense of humour and an "onwards and upwards" approach? Your resolve is admirable, and I'm sure she's very proud of that. Sure she was with you at the wedding, too..

I feel for ya. My mom took her own life 2 years ago but it still feels like yesterday (her birthday is next month on this day) and still hurts me. My father also passed a couple months ago. Both meant a lot to me. You have my deepest empathy Aaron. Just think of all the good things.
