Hello guys, I don't know if this is a bug or something but I just can't get pinballx to respond to my keyboard presses.

Here is the whole story. I recently reformatted my system but backed up PinballX install dir to a D:\Pinball\PinballX drive. (My first installation was on C:\PinballX) . After copy/paste the backup I updated pinballx through the installer to 1.72 but since the restore process I just can't get my keyboard to work. I went through the settings wizzard process and was able to map the keys but I'm getting no response from PinballX.

I tried everything, uninstall and reinstall did not work. I've also checked to config file and the keys were mapped correctly in the file.

Any clues?

btw. I'm using windows 7 and I tried the same with Hyperpin and everything works fine.

Thanks in advance

I found and merged both threads as they are reporting the same issue. Sorry you are having a problem with the keyboard. I ask both of you to read this thread and provide the oft-requested log.txt and pinballx.ini files noted in the thread. Also provide details about your OS and any codecs you have installed. Thanks, guys!

"07:58:13.5 2014-02-17: Hiding Cursor" - not true. I can see cursor all the time! I am using 3 monitor display prepared to become cabinet. After running PinballX.exe I have 2 monitors "taken" by Frontend (wannnabe-dmd monitor just shows wallpaper) and visible cursor - I can move cursor to 3th monitor and click - this minimalize PinballX to taskbar and I can click on it and choose "close window" - its only thing that saves me from hard reset.

"07:58:13.5 2014-02-17: Loading Custom Database: Visual Pinball - Copy" - I deleted this file but it didn't change anythying

Forget to mention - keybord is like PinballX-dead. If I pres ctrl+alt+del I can start task menager but right after start its hidden under PinballX frontend so with no 3th monitor and possilility to click on its area to minimalize probably I would have to hard reset my rig. Looks like "focus" is on this damn cursor, and frontend works on "lower layer" or something?!

What OS (and codecs - while not necessary in this case, good to know regardless)?

Do you have the issue with an usb keyboard too?

If it is a focus problem: I think you already tried alt+tab to set focus on PinballX, don´t you?

What monitor setup (Numbers and order) do you have in windows display settings?

Win7 64 bit, pretty nice rig with [email protected] and GFX770.

My keybord is USB logitech k290. I tryed to switch to old PS2 keyboard - but as I mention that does not change a thing.

I did not installed any extra codecs - don't think my system needs it, every video file I have tryed seems to play with no problem.

Hyperpin works like a charm.

My monitors:

Playfield: [1920x1080 iyama] Backglass: [1600x1200 nec] DMD: [1600x1200 iyama]

In nvidia panel order is

MONITOR2 [1920x1080 iyama] (* main / dvi): MONITOR3 [1600x1200 nec / dvi] MONITOR1: [1600x1200 iyama / hdmi]

But as mentioned - everything works nice in Hyperpin. Seems to also work nice in PnballX - graphics or monitor order is not my problem - lack of keyboard response is.

Alt+tab do nothing.

alt+f4 do nothing

ctrl+alt+del brings standar win screen alowing me to start task menager - but right after Ill do it its hidden under PinballX and only possibility to move this damn cursor (visable all the time) and click on this "dmd" screen saves me from hard reset.

Cursor is visible all the time.

This is killing me...

Just taking a stab here....what is your default language and keyboard language set to?

I know there were issues with FP if you were not running an English OS, not the same issue you are having....but it has to be something simple.

Issue with FP is about measurement system - it can be fixed by changing it in system or by modification table script... and if no fixed it results with mess on dmd when displaying score and has nothing to do with non responding keyboard.

I am using english Win 7 ultimate 64 bit with system language set to us english and polish programmer keyboard. I tryed to switch keyboard seting anyway but just like I thought it didn't solve the problem.

I think problem is somehow connected with this bloody cursor visible all the time. :(

Both pinballx.exe AND vpinball.exe are both unblocked and set to run as adminstrator?

Something to look at:

http://www.gopinball.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3920

"Do you have an IR receiver attached to the box? I recall a while ago there was an issue w/ a MSFT mouse/keyboard/HID driver being installed that you had to remove and the key control came back. 103 key keyboard? Something like that, affected VP too." - from your link.

Thank you for your help Zeenon.

Yap,I think it's probably something like this.

I have logitech usb beyboard k290, logitech mouse MX518 (both don't require any extra driver) and x-box 360 wierless controller (extra driver installed)...

Even If I could I am unwiling to uninstall any of my drivers - maybye it's x-box controller, but I am using it in many games....

I tryed to set x-box controller as joystick and it PARTIALY work - I am abble to start first table, but flippers dont move, I can't turn frontend wheele, etc - I can't play... But start buttton works. Damn strange.

I give up, I will stick to hyperpin.Maybye I will try PinballX in few months in other, newer version.

Please Devs, sort this out.

Not much the devs can do to sort it out without more troubleshooting. I would recommend using standard keyboard, mouse and possibly a gamepad to see if that remedies the issue, then add your components back one at a time to see which one "breaks" the functionality again. Since there are a myriad of 3rd party pads, wireless keyboards, etc., it is truly difficult for a developer to account for every one of them without the end-users performing some of the heavy lifting and reporting back their results.

While I understand your frustration, saying "I give up, I will stick to hyperpin.Maybye I will try PinballX in few months in other, newer version. Please Devs, sort this out." won't help them to make your experience with the product better.

Mate, I did my best: I switched keyboards, played with my system and frontend setting, tryed to google some solution and tryed every advise ppl gave me here (thank you all).

And I tryed to deliver as much information in problem description as I could.

I really wanted to try PinballX. But enough is enough. Hyperpin works like a charm! I am not going to waste more time on this, now it's up to devs.

Last thing:

Uninstaller is broken - uninstall proces left PinballX folder with "Flash.ocx" inside. File has broken ownership status/rights and cannot be delated manualy untill you fix this. I am not computer geek so it took me another few minutes to google how to do it... it should not be like this! FIX THIS DEVS!

Vinthar - I understand your frustration but it does sound to me like you are having other issues with your setup that are complicating what should not be this difficult.

If this is an issue with the application proper, we should be hearing from more than one or two users out of hundreds that are using it successfully. Textually screaming "FIX THIS DEVS!" is not going to get you very far and, if you are unwilling to do any leg work and provide detailed responses to our questions as we try to step you through an issue, nothing is going to change for you, I'm afraid.

I am not frustrated Draco. I think PinballX has some very cool features - like dmd movie - and I wanted to try it. Bit since PinballX does not works on my system and looks like there is nothing I can do to fix this (and believe me I have tryed!)I see no reason to be frustrated or to waste time while other software with the same function works for me just fine.

So I simply report to devs: on some systems keyboard does not work and unistaller have some serious issues.

I will for sure try PinballX again in future when some newer version will be available.

For now enough is enough - I want to play pinball in my free time, not waste time for fighting with pinball frontend...

Thanks to everyone who tryed to help.

Hi Rainman. Just wanted you to know that we haven't forgotten about you regarding this issue. Have you been able to resolve this issue for yourself or do you still require assistance? Please provide a copy of your pinballx.ini and log.txt file and any other pertinent information. You will also want to download and install version 1.75 prior to providing your log.txt. Thanks!

Some things to try:

1. Is PinballX losing focus when you launch it? Try clicking your mouse on the window. Does it respond to input now?

2. Install the latest version of Flash (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/)

3. Install video codecs (http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html)

Try each step in order and check after each step if anything changed. Report back your findings here.

As for the issue with Flash.ocx, try deleting it using Unlocker (http://www.emptyloop.com/unlocker/). It will also tell you what process is preventing the file from being deleted. Let us know what file is preventing it from being deleted. It may clue us in to what the problem is. Most likely it will be PinballX.exe in which case it would seem that PinballX is infact crashing and not exiting gracefully.

PinballX starts with mouse cursor visible... I can run cursor but keybord does not work, clicking mouse does nothing untill I move cursor to 3th monitor (1,& 2 are occupy by PinballX). Clicking mouse on 3th monitor minimize frontend to task bar and I can close it.

I have latest version of Flash.

I installed this codecs but it changed nothing.

Flash.ocx stil has messed owning rights and is undeletable withouth previous manuall ingerention.

I am aware of the flash issue.

I see no log in this topic or information about the ops system hardware and software.

PinbalX log is at post #5 - you can take a look but nothing wrong in it.

System hardware was also mention before. Don't know if this will help but here is dxdiag log:

You do need 32 bit codecs for PinballX even though they play in windows did you install Shark 32 bit version?

Have you maybe got a device that has a key or button held down? Have you tried unplugging all gamepads etc?

I can tell you the keyboard code in PinballX does nothing low level it just uses standard windows api calls.

I also see you have a load of codecs installed that could be interfering, specifically cyberlink. I do not see shark codecs installed.
