Hello all,
I've been having trouble recently with more frequent GameEx crashes. I purchased GameEx early in 2011 and don't remember any codec crash problems until the past few months. It actually makes the application unusable. I think I have isolated the problem down to video codec problems. The system is:

- Win 7 x64
- NVIDIA Quattro FX 3800
- Latest GameEx (as of 12/25/2011)
- Emumovies mix of avi, mp4
- Default GameEx theme (the blue one)

Depending on the random movie it plays on first startup, I do not even get to the main menu.

I have read some forum topics around Shark007 and Klite codecs. I have tried uninstalling the codecs, and doing a fresh install of Shark007, and I still have the same results. I have tried uninstalling Shark007 and installing Klite, and still have the same results. I have tried not installing the 64 bit components (only the 32 bit components) on either Shark007 or Klite, and have the same results. I have tried "messing with" the seemingly endless amount of settings within Shark007 and Klite without success.

Once it crashes, it will continue to crash almost every GameEx launch unless I reboot. After the reboot, it's hit or miss how long it takes to crash.

If under Multimedia/HTCP I change DVD MPEG2 Codec to blank, I get no crashes (or video). I typically have this set to ffdshow.

I have no problems with any other application on the system with video (iTunes, Premier, Windows Media Player, etc). I can play all of the emumovies video files from windows explorer / windows media (or media classic) fine. It seems that there is a problem with how GameEx invokes / handles the codecs.

If I look at the GameEx log file, there is no real error message - just saying that it got to the Main loop. I've tried deleting *cache* from gameex\data, but it doesn't help.

Looking at the Windows event viewer - application log, on a crash I get the following 2 entries below at the bottom of the email. If I disable the MPEG2 codec above, I get no crash bugs.

This may be completely unrelated, but when GameEx first starts up, the mouse moves to the lower right corner of the screen. If I hover over the text icons (such as Emulators) by moving from the right to the left and hover over a few text buttons before clicking the one I want, I get frequent crashes. If I move the mouse under the text over to the far left, then move the mouse up to the same level as the text (but still on the background), and then move over to the right, it doesn't crash. That one has annoyed me for a while.

Does anybody have suggestions on how to setup codecs to work with GameEx? Is there a FAQ / recommeneded seetings for codecs? This seems to be a black art, and it doesn't seem to be a problem for
everyone.

I can post my gameex.ini, but it's pretty long - what are the [] tags for a spoiler?

Your gameex.ini will be helpful and a copy of log.txt immediately following one of the described crashes as well?

I noticed in the gameex.ini the following:

UseVMR9=True
EnableExternalPlayer=False
Use VMR9=False

Not sure if this is a bug but it would seem that the second instance of vmr9 would cancel out the first. try removing the one that =s false, save the change, and see if that helps. If so, then we definitely have found a bug.

Made the change. It still crashes (although, it may just be me, but I made it through a few different emulators before it crashed. Let me know what else might be wrong if anything else to try.

Thanks.

I looked at your log.txt file and it does not appear to be a complete file nor does it appear to be a log file immediately following the crash you are reporting. A clean or incomplete log file gives us little to work with.

That log file was right when it crashed. To be clean, I just deleted the log file, started GameEx, and ran through a few menus waiting for the crash to occur. Here should be the cleanest log file I can generate:

Did it crash just before the log file you posted? Usually, if the crash is within GameEx, then there should be some sort of error appearing in the log file.

Here's my procedure.
I deleted the log file.
I ran GameEx until it crashed.
I posted the log file.

This was the same procedure for both log file postings. I noticed that there is no entry in the last line that indicates a crash of any kind. However, in the event viewer, you can see the application crash details. As I mentioned in the original post, I'm almost certain this has to do with the codecs - if I disable MPEG2 all together, I never get any crashes (or any movies). I have no idea how to troubleshoot this more.

Do you have both the Windows 7 Codecs and X64 Components installed (Shark007)? What settings have you tried? Are they just the default ones? Do these files play fine using Windows Media Player outside of GameEx?

Yes, per my original description, I've tried all the combinations of Shark007 and Klite. Namely, just 32 bit and 32 bit and then 64 bit on top. I'm using the default options. I've tried modifying the settings, but I don't really know what I'm doing and it seems to have little change in the crashes. Also, videos play fine in Windows Media Player. I can run the emumovies.com movies fine (avi, mp4).

Next step would be to troubleshoot in real-time. Perhaps meet in the chat room sometime soon to try a few settings and hopefully resolve this.

I happened to check and the 007 shark v 3.40 codecs are out now. I uninstalled the old x64 version, then the 32 bit version. Rebooted. Install the 32 bit version, install the 64 bit version, and right clicked run as administrator the codec settings icon. I changed my mpeg2 playback back to ffdshow in gameex. I have the latest gameex, and (cross fingers) I haven't seen the crash problem. I ran it about 5 times and it has been working ok. I'll keep everyone posted here on the stability if it starts to degrade again.
