i've asked this question before here, and the general consensus is that emulators, when opened by the command line, will always exit when the escape key is pressed. this is due to how the emulators themselves are coded, and not due to any dosbox behavior.
i've just installed some dos games using dosbox, and sure enough, whenever the escape key is pressed, the game closes and gameex is relaunched. this is proving to be quite an annoyance, seeing as most games use the escape key to access a main menu.
i have 'map keys' toggled at 'no', so as to avoid gameex from closing the game for me, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
is there anything else anyone can tell me about how to re-enable the escape key functionality while in game? it's rendering some classic games (doom, in this instance) unplayable.

I found a great tutorial for dosbox, but can't find the author on how to utilize Autoit Script editor to configure your own 'kill switch'. Let me look for it again and I will post the link

Okay I found the post:
Here is the link to the post:

Then scroll down to post # 15 by Lorecarver. This worked like a charm for me. For Doom and Duke3d the Esc key is needed to view options within the game. So I mapped my 'Kill Switch' to be the key "e".
The download instruction files worked great (a little tricky for me at first to grasp) and provided me with a way to change the kill switch key. You will have to change the the mapkeys configuration within the config file in gameex for that emulator.
Send me a note if you have questions.

thanx everyone. you were right tspeirs, apparently the "mapping off (escape) exit" advanced config file is enabled by default in the gameex setup utility.
very confusing, seeing as setting 'map keys' to off is supposed to disable this 'press escape to exit' thing.
am i just thinking about this in the wrong way or something?
anyway, all is up and running perfectly now. love this proggy
